Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease- An Overview

Degenerative Disc Disease, usually, affects the lower back or lumbar spine of an individual. It is known as a syndrome in which a patient suffers lower back pain because of compromised disc.

Even though there have been cases where genetic component is found to be associated with DDD condition, the fact is that it arises because of several factors. It might be the traumatic injury or simple wear and tear. However, it is important for you to know that it seldom begins because of some major trauma like car accident. As observed in most of the cases, it is because of the low energy injury to the disc that an individual suffers from the condition. It is the slow progress of the disease along with avoidable circumstances that often the condition is identified in later stages.

Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease does not have a blood supply. Therefore, like other injuries that repair it the way other tissues do, this is not the case with LDDD.  There is very possibility that even an unimportant injury to the disc can trigger a degenerative cascade in which the disc starts wearing out.   Although the disease sounds to be dramatic, it is common and is found in more than forty percent of the people aged between 30 and 50 years of age. However, not every patient suffers pain and in most of the cases by the time formal diagnose takes place, the condition of the patient deteriorates significantly.

It is only when patient fails to show any kind of improvement with the medication, steroids and non-invasive techniques; surgeons recommend surgery for Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease.

Understanding Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease

In the recent years, there has been a rise in number of people suffering from back and neck pain. The condition of patients suffering from the diseases worsens if not treated on time. More often than not, candidates are not even aware of their existing condition. It is only during routine check up that come to know about the real cause of back and neck pain.  Disc degeneration is one of the most common causes of pain.

Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease grows like a sore and within no time your neck becomes stiff. However, anatomic change that is consequential to the condition might lead to pain and nerve compression that radiates into your hands, shoulders and arms. In some cases, life of patient becomes so miserable that he or she finds it tough to even meet their daily activities.

The cervical spine is found in the upper back or neck area. It comprises of seven vertebrae and each one of them is separated by discs that are filled with substance that is similar to gel. It is these discs that allow a person to bend and turn without any difficulty. The condition of disc degeneration occurs when the discs starts wearing out because of years of twisting, turning and bending or a person faces damage because of an injury.

When the discs starts breaking down, the space between the vertebrae narrows resulting into nerve roots that might start pinching. Slowly, neck starts losing flexibility. Weakness in fingers, arms, shoulders and hands; pain, tingling and numbness are the symptoms that you might experience in case of Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease.

Treatment for Lumbar Herniated Disc

The care of a patient suffering from Lumbar degenerative disc disease is different from standardized. As a matter of fact, it is individualized for every patient.

The options of treatment for the condition are dependent on the duration of time for which the patient had been suffering from the severe back pain. There are other considerations as well like the nature of symptoms like numbness and weakness present including the age of the patient.

Usually the patient undergoing treatment for Lumbar Herniated Disc is started with six to twelve weeks of non-surgical treatment that comprise of medications, epidural injections and physical exercises. Surgeon will prescribe the nonsurgical treatment on the basis of patient’s condition.

If patient fails to show even the slight improvement for the condition after taking pain relief and the conditions seems to be persisting then the last resort is surgery. Surgeon wills recommend the surgery only after trying other methods. Here are the conditions in which surgery might be recommended:

  • The patient is experiencing constant neurological symptoms like numbness and weakness that worsen each passing day.
  • The pain is extremely severe and patient is finding it tough to even meet day to day activities.

As observed in most of the cases, symptoms related to Lumbar Herniated Disc will resolve with time.  No matter what surgeon will recommend surgery only in cases where there is no improvement from non-invasive medicines. A series of test is performed by doctor to diagnose the conditions and, therefore the treatment accordingly.

Fundamentals and Goals of Artificial Disc Replacement

A large number of people all over the world are feeling the pangs of back pain. In some cases, condition of patient is so severe that he is recommended spinal fusion surgery right away. If you are also facing the condition that is similar to this then there is no need for you to worry as there is an alternative – Artificial Disc Replacement. It is one of the most recent treatments for treating the condition of back problems. Today, ADR is easily available and has shown successful results among those who have undergone the procedure. What makes it the most sought-after options is the fact that it eliminates the requirement for spinal fusion surgery.

The primary objective of this surgery is to improve the mobility and reduce level of pain amongst patients suffering from lower back or lumbar pain. It is relatively a new procedure but has gained immense popularity amongst medical practitioners and orthopaedic surgeons.

Spinal discs are located amid the vertebrae or bones of the spine and works as shock absorbers or cushions for the vertebrae. These discs are also responsible for the motion as well as flexibility of the spinal column.

However, when you age these discs start becoming weak and develop cracks and tears in the exterior portion leading to the problem of Degenerative Disc Disease. Moreover, there is very possibility that the internal part might swell out and press against the exterior part causing pain.

The sole purpose of Artificial Disc Replacement is to replace the damaged disc while preserving the motion of spine. Finally, your back pain will subside and slowly vanish and there will be no risk of developing the problem at an adjacent level of the spine.

Artificial Disc Replacement for Lower Back Pain

Millions of people all over the world are suffering from pain in lower back. As a matter of fact, studies indicate that low back pain is one of the prime causes of disability in United States. According to various other studies, it is suggested that almost 70 percent to 80 percent of people will experience pain lower back at some point or the other in their lives. Although orthopedic surgeons try hard to ensure that a patient gets back to normal life without having to go through surgical procedure, in most of the cases surgery is the last resort.

Artificial Disc Replacement is relatively a new surgical technique that helps you get rid of back pain. It is a lot more similar to knee and hip joint replacements. It is a substitute for spinal fusion surgery. Post the surgery, patient can get back to his normal life. This device is used for restoring movement to the spine by replacing the degenerated or damaged disc.

It has been more than a decade that this technique first hit the medical field. It was only in 2004 that FDA approved the implementation of ADR. Since then, several designs for disc replacement have been developed for offering better results.

Orthopedic surgeons perform a series of tests with an objective to determine who the right candidate for Artificial Disc Replacement is. Some of these tests include X-Rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT or CAT scan) and Discography. Once these tests are performed, orthopedic surgeon determines the source of the lower back pain.

Consider Spondylolisthesis Surgery to Get Relieved from Persistent Back Pain

A condition in which inflammation is caused in the joints of the spine and also of the joints between the pelvis and the spine joints and results in stiffness and pain in the neck and back is known as spondylolisthesis. This problem is more common and severe amongst men than in women and usually targets the people within the age group of 16-40 years. Most of the symptoms of spondylolisthesis come and go but one of the most common symptom is the back pain that is worse in the morning and night but the patient gets relief with gentle activity.

However, a spondylolisthesis surgery is recommended by the doctors if the reason for pain is due to herniated disc. A condition which involves dislocations as well as fractures may also involve surgery. If you are suffering from neurological disorders due to nerve instability, then surgical treatment cannot be avoided. Most of the physicians do not recommend a back surgery except in the case when it is unavoidable and really necessary. The patients who opt for this surgery may face several risks. They could include risks related to bleeding, lung difficulties, paralysis, lung weakness, blood clots, infection, sexual dysfunction as well as urinary or fecal incontinence etc.

Many times, a patient does not actually require a spondylolisthesis surgery. A physician may recommend the same if the pain has been persistent for more than 6 months. Or have leg or arm weakness, foot of leg numbness, problems with bladder or bowel control, spinal instability and so on. If you have any of the above mentioned problems, then you must consider a back surgery.

An Insight in to Surgery and Road to Recovery

A “Cervical Fusion” refers to a surgical process that connects together injured portions of vertebral column located in the neck.  The need for this form of surgery arises when the discs between each vertebrae and cervical vertebrae have suffered damage because of an injury.  During the surgery, orthopaedic surgeons remove vertebrae so that bone growth is stimulated to join adjacent vertebrae.   Generally, a metal device is used for stabilizing the growing fusion.

There are several factors that determine the recovery from cervical fusion. As with other surgeries, this surgery is considered a success when the symptoms of patient suffering from dieses improve and the bone located across the fused vertebrate is healed. It might take three to four months to recover completely. Activities that you will be permitted depends on the strength of the fusion.
In patients having solid metal fixation and string bone, there is very possibility surgeons might allow more activity. Contrary to it, recovery would be slow in patients who have apprehensions about their ability to fuse vertebrate. Orthopedic Surgeons Atlanta can help you get rid of cervical fusion. Initial Treatment For Spondylolisthesis

Majority of people today are suffering from varied health conditions due one or the other reason. However, one of the most common reasons that lead to conditions such as Spondylolisthesis or Cervical Herniated Disc is the lifestyle.   As far as the former is concerned, preliminarily treatment is conservative and depends on the symptoms that vary from one individual to another.

Enlisted are a few Spondylolisthesis Treatment options recommended to a patient suffering from similar condition.

•    Physical therapy helps to enhance the range of motion of the hamstrings as well as lumbar spine. Also, it will strengthen the muscles of abdominal area.
•    Patients who are suffering from isthmic spondylolisthesis can benefit from a hypertension brace.

•    Avoiding activities akin to athletics, bending and lifting; or rest for a few days might reduce the symptoms.

•    Patients who experience tingling, pain and numbness in the legs can feel relaxed from an epidural steroid injection.

•    Intake of anti-inflammatory medications helps in decreasing pain by reducing the inflammation of nerves as well as muscles.

If symptoms, rather conditions, do not get better with conservative treatment then surgery is the way to go.  Such surgeries are determined on the basis of spondylolisthesis that a patient is suffering from.

An Insight Into Two Common Disc Diseases

Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease begins with a twisting injuring to your lower back. This usually happens when you rotate to put something on a shelf. However, it is important for you to know that the pain also occurs because of wear and tear of the spine. It can be easily cured with non-surgical means that is conservative treatment. Doctors prescribe medication to reduce pain and inflammation (in the form of injection or oral medicines), exercise and physical therapy. Health care professionals prescribe surgery only when patients find no relief over the span of six months of non-surgical care.

Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease is one of the most common causes of pain in neck. It is felt as a stiff neck. In comparison to the disc degeneration of the lumbar spine, it is less commonly found. This is because neck is far lesser subject to force and torque.  Nevertheless, a twist or an injury developed due to fall to the disc space can lead to degeneration. In addition to this, wear and tear on the disc for a long time can also spur neck pain that is caused because of disc degeneration. Numbness, tingling and weakness in shoulders, neck or arms are a common symptoms.

A Sneak-Peek

Cervical Fusion is the name given to a surgical procedure that connects together injured sections of the vertebral column in the neck. The need for the surgery arises when the discs between cervical vertebrae suffers damage due to chronic wear and tear and injury. During this surgery, the discs between vertebrae are removed. Growth of bone is stimulated to connect adjacent vertebrae. Generally, doctors make use of a metal device for stabilizing the fusion until the growth of bone becomes solid.

This type of surgery is also known as Arthrodesis and it ends up linking two or more than two adjacent vertebrae permanently. Usually, between each disc are spinal vertebrae. Although, this disc functions like a cushion it also lets some movement between vertebrae. This type of surgery is performed due to the constant problem caused due to the spinal disc by pushing a nerve.  This constant and nerve pressure causes irritation consequential to symptoms such as numbness, tingling and pain in the arms as well as neck.

Orthopedic Surgeons Atlanata has the expertise and skills to perform this form of surgery. You can simply browse the World Wide Web and zero-in on the surgeon that you think is best according to your present situation.

What Can Spur Neck Pain?

Arm pain arising because of a Cervical Herniated Disc is one of the most common conditions of cervical spine.  This type of condition is usually developed amongst those belonging to 30-50 year old age group.  Albeit the main cause of its occurrence is injury or trauma to the cervical spine, the symptoms start spontaneously. Neck pain and symptoms that originate because of herniated disc tend to form the common problems for adults. Various bones, joints, ligaments and muscles including similar anatomic structures together compose neck.  Almost each of these above said structure comprise of nerve endings that can perceive painful problems on their occurrence.

One of the most common causes of neck pain is the cervical disc degeneration and stiffness in neck is felt because of this only. Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease is less common in comparison to disc degeneration in the lumbar line as the neck is subjected to lesser force and torque. Nevertheless, an injury developed due to a fall or twist to the disc space can incite degeneration. Furthermore, it can also lead to wear and tear on the disc over certain period of time that is can be one of the prime reasons of the neck pain caused due to disc degeneration.
